Programs:

Deer Control
One of the ongoing programs Landcare is involved with is the Yarra Ranges Council Deer reduction program.
The results of the Steels Creek deer cull November 2023, run by the shire had been really successful in starting to tackle the significant deer problem which is causing multiple issues such as environmental, biosecurity risks, road traffic risks and a key reason why there is a significant increase in illegal shooters entering the area due to the high numbers.   Due to the positive result and feedback from program participants, Stage 2 started in March 2024 which was initially slow due to the winter season from wet paddocks for most participants.  As of March 2025, we are currently waiting on council feedback to confirm if funding has been approved from DEECA to continue this successful program to June 2026.  Overall due to the ongoing culling efforts of the council and community participation, we have seen a large reduction in numbers and will require ongoing participation into the foreseeable future to ensure their numbers remain low.

2023/2024 report is here:  https://www.northernyarralandcare.com.au/report-deer-2023-cull

This deer issue is wide spread across the eastern seaboard and is a major focus of all state governments and local councils who are aiming to have a multi year programs.  If your interested in finding out more or wanting to participate, there are details in the report or simply reach out at [email protected] for a chat.
